The lock twisted, and the door slowly creaked open.
Inside Room 801, the temperature was terrifyingly low, as if stepping into an ice cellar. Ji Yan shivered uncontrollably.
"Hello? Is anyone here?"
He called out tentatively, but there was no response.
With no other choice, Ji Yan stepped into the living room, where he spotted a rocking chair. Though no one sat in it, it swayed gently on its own.
Beside the television, an old-fashioned radio played a soft, melodious tune.
"An Invisible Supernatural Entity?"
Ji Yan’s expression shifted slightly. He tried calling out to the empty chair a couple of times, but there was no reaction.
The next moment, he felt a chill run down his spine—followed by a hauntingly beautiful yet icy voice whispering right beside his ear.
"Where did you get that key in your hand?"
The voice sent a wave of terror through Ji Yan, making every hair on his body stand on end. His right fingers involuntarily splayed open, and the key floated mid-air.
Then, his fingers were forcibly bent backward—one by one—stretching further and further.
Excruciating pain shot through him, cold sweat beading on his forehead.
"You only get one sentence to answer."
Staring at his fingers on the verge of snapping, Ji Yan cursed inwardly.
Damn it, do all the supernatural entities on the 8th Floor have screws loose?
None of them even bother with a proper conversation before resorting to violence!
His lips trembling, Ji Yan forced out the words: "Huang Sheng from Room 102 gave it to me."
"Is that so? Pity, time’s up."
Crack— A crisp, synchronized snap echoed as all five fingers bent backward at once, bones fracturing.
Gazing at his grotesquely deformed hand, Ji Yan’s breath hitched, his mind blanking out for a split second.
Only one thought remained:
My hand is ruined!
Yet, after a few seconds of sheer horror, his vision blurred.
When he refocused, his right hand was perfectly intact again, still clutching the key tightly.
A woman’s light, mocking laughter rang in his ears.
"Just messing with you."
"Did you wet yourself from fear?"
Ji Yan nearly spat out a string of curses but swallowed them back.
The chilling presence beside him vanished, and the rocking chair resumed its eerie creaking.
"Huang Sheng? Wasn’t he kicked out of the apartment?"
"How could he still give you a key?"
Ji Yan had no choice but to recount the entire incident again.
After listening, the Invisible Supernatural Entity burst into inexplicable laughter, as if something had tickled her.
"Chiseling through the wall? You’ve got guts! That old Landlord must’ve been furious. It’s a miracle you’re still alive and kicking!"
Ji Yan muttered under his breath, "Not dead yet. Just still useful."
"Otherwise, I wouldn’t be wandering around this death trap of an 8th Floor in the middle of the night."
The rocking chair continued its grating squeaks.
"Alright, out with it. What mess have you gotten yourself into now?"
Ji Yan rubbed his nose. "Just a minor issue."
"Some… unfinished business with the family in Room 804."
The moment he said this, the Invisible Supernatural Entity on the rocking chair materialized before Ji Yan’s eyes—dressed in a flowing white gown, her ink-black hair cascading like a waterfall, her face flawless as polished jade.
Ji Yan froze for a second.
The Resident of Room 801 was just as stunning as the Charming Specter on the first floor—though her complexion was unnaturally pale.
"Room 804?"
"That family’s vicious, especially the old hag—she’s a total shrew."
"That little favor from Huang Sheng was just me borrowing some money from him when I couldn't pay the rent."
"Later, when I paid him back, that guy even charged me interest. It doesn't even count as a real favor!"
"And that key? I just left it with him as collateral and forgot to take it back."
The White-Dressed Female Supernatural Entity lifted her gaze slightly and spoke plainly.
Hearing this, Ji Yan's hope dimmed considerably.
Damn.
That favor really was worthless!
And Huang Sheng had the nerve to talk about repaying him!
"Still, I used to have a good relationship with his daughter in the apartment. I quite liked that girl."
"It's just a shame she ended up with such a tragic father—bricked into the wall, unable to go anywhere. Huang Sheng thought keeping his daughter in the apartment was protecting her."
"Little did he know, that self-righteous 'greatness' was just torturing his own daughter in another form."
Ji Yan listened but didn't comment.
Back when he was at that wall, he could indeed sense the agony of the entity trapped inside…
Remembering the blood seeping from the wall when he chiseled it, he had even dared to wonder— Was the entire Crimson Apartment built from the flesh and blood of supernatural entities?
Maybe that was why the apartment stood unshaken in the Eerie World.
But Ji Yan didn’t dwell on it. That likely tied into the Main Plot, and he didn’t want to get involved.
"So, Huang Sheng's favor is useless."
"But for his daughter's sake, I can help you—on one condition."
Ji Yan didn’t rush to agree. "What condition?"
"Haven’t decided yet. I’ll let you know when I think of it."
"..."
Ji Yan pondered for a moment, then decisively shook his head. "Then I’ll figure it out myself. Sorry to bother you."
He couldn’t agree.
None of the entities on the 8th Floor were easy to deal with.
Tonight’s Mission was already about fixing the mess he made by breaking the wall for the Landlord.
If he made another deal with a different entity, he’d just be patching one hole while creating another—an endless cycle!
"It’s too late now."
"The Dead-Eyed Gui has already noticed your little trick. It’s coming upstairs."
"In five minutes, my door will be knocked on."
"So right now, I’m the only one who can save you."
The White-Dressed Entity rested her chin on her hand, watching Ji Yan with an amused smirk.
Ji Yan frowned, sharp enough to catch something. "You’ve been watching me this whole time?"
"You’ve been wandering around the 8th Floor for so long, and that woman was screaming so loudly—even if I were deaf, I’d have heard it."
"The entity in the Rooftop Water Tank is their daughter."
"They know she’s trapped in there, turned into some ugly Resentful Supernatural Entity, but they won’t save her. In fact, they’ll even kill anyone who tries to help."
"Know why?"
Ji Yan: "Why?"
"That daughter of theirs got infected with something unclean. Think of it like a terrible illness. If she stayed in Room 804, not only would they be kicked out, but they’d also get infected—turned into those half-human, half-ghost monstrosities."
"Besides, that girl was just a foster child."
"So those parents came up with this brilliant plan—if they couldn’t get rid of her, they’d trick her into the water tank."
"Sure, it avoided infection and slipped past the Landlord and the Apartment Rules, but they underestimated how bad her 'illness' was. It even contaminated the apartment’s water supply."
"So, once they find out you're here for their daughter, they'll do everything to kill you!"
"First, they're afraid their naive daughter will learn the truth, climb out of the water tank, and keep haunting them."
"Second, they're terrified the Landlord—who can't go up to the rooftop—will discover they're the ones responsible for contaminating the water supply. If that happens, they’ll definitely be kicked out."
The White-Dressed Female Supernatural Entity gently smoothed her dark hair and tilted her head toward Ji Yan. "Understand now?"
Ji Yan was utterly stunned.
Finally, he took a deep breath and asked, "How... how do you know all this so clearly?"
"Such trivial gossip? Of course I know."
"I love hearing gossip the most."
"Though I usually stay silent—I don’t like stirring up trouble."
"Every resident on the 8th floor has some ridiculous, dramatic gossip!"
The White-Dressed Female Supernatural Entity giggled, her exquisite face under the moonlight leaving anyone who saw it dazed.
Considering how she never left her room yet knew every move he made between the 7th and 8th floors, Ji Yan guessed this was likely one of her abilities...
